“So, what’s your plan?” Matias asked me, a short time later. The sun was out with very little wind and I could feel the temperature climb. Sara and Darcy were behind me, talking to each other. Some of it sounded like petty words and accusations. Personal stuff I’d rather avoid. Jenny was dragging along behind them.

I told Matias, quietly, about the aerial map and where the plane could be, adding that Sara knew the approximate area but wouldn’t divulge more until I found her a good home. Matias frowned. “Good luck with that. Sounds like Bale is making it miserable for his neighbors. You’ll have to go far to find any peace from him.”

“I passed a small town called Peachberry before I met you,” I told him. “They seemed civilized last I saw. We are heading in that direction. Maybe there are other towns closer to the Colorado River too.”

“That’s where the other plane went?” Matias asked.

“She said the Orange County SkyBlue jet landed somewhere west of here as it ran out of fuel. That would be towards California. If I can find the plane, I can find the passenger manifest and see if my mother-in-law was on the plane. If she was, I’m hoping I could find her and she would tell me. It would also eliminate other areas so I wouldn’t have to travel to them. It’s my best shot so far.”

Matias harped on my logic. “What if she wasn’t on the plane?”

“Then I’ll try to find the other SkyBlue jets. Darcy has to be good for something,” I snickered, not caring if he heard.

“Still sounds like a long shot,” Matias said.

“It’s all I have to go on.”

“I hope it works out for you,” Matias said. Nuke walked next to Matias when he wasn’t sniffing the odd tree, guardrail, or rock. We didn’t mind, the one-eared Pitbull never held us up. I caught Matias eyeing Nuke often. I could feel him getting attached.

We came to a spot in the road and the old man stumped me when he said goodbye, stuffing some MREs from his backpack into mine.

“What do you mean goodbye?” I asked him as he lightened his load.

Zipping up my backpack, he said, “I know a trail ahead that leads towards my cabin this way. Your mission isn’t mine. I’d rather head home and let you be. I got plenty to eat there.”

Sara and Darcy walked up. “What’s going on?” she asked.

“Matias is leaving us,” I told them. I then turned to my old friend. “You going to be okay?”

“Yeah,” he admitted. “I’ll manage, like usual. You go find your family.” Nuke stood next to him. The two of them were almost inseparable.

Darcy said, “I thought we were all staying together. Where are we going then?”

“Sara is going to show me where the Orange County plane landed. That’s a start. I had a family onboard. Maybe.”

Darcy did a double-take. “Maybe? You don’t know?”

“Going to find out. It’s the only SkyBlue flight where I may learn something. Besides, the LA flight you were on.
